The original Panther Westwinds Company, as it was then known in 1972 (established in a town about 40 miles south-west of London called Byfleet located next to the famous Brooklands race track), first produced the Panther Lima MkI around 1976. This 1930's styled sports car had a fiberglass body that was built around a steel framework, then attached to a steel chassis. The engine and running gear were supplied by Vauxhall (General Motors). They produced the 2300cc Magnum engine and sturdy running gear which was well proven in in the rally and touring car race circuits in the mid to late 1970's. The MkII version of the Lima was basically the same car but with a stronger chassis and upgraded cosmetics. There were around 900 Lima MkI cars produced between 1976 and 1979 and 200 MkII cars made between 1979 and 1980.
During 1980, Panther Westwinds was purchased by a Korean business man who continued producing a similar style car to the Lima called the Kallista (which had an alloy body and ford running gear and engine). Panther continued producing these cars until it evenyually folded during the late 1980's or early 1990's.
Pete's car was built in 1980 and stayed in the showroom for 3 years (it was first registered in 1983). The car has had 3 previous owners and has stayed in england (a lot of these cars ended up in europe). It has accumulated 40,200 miles, and has the original paint work. Pete drives it often, but only when it's dry and warm.
If you have any questions about Pete Powell's car, feel free to send him a note.....
